The monoskiing workshop was a joke. But this one is for real! Learn to telemark ski! What is Tele Skiing? Telemark skiing is 'free-heel' skiing and it looks like the people are doing lunges down the hill. The turns are extremely fun, and they definitely look cool. Also, telemark skiing is a great way to get out of the resort and into the backcountry. Backcountry skiing is great because you don't have to buy a lift ticket, there are no lines, and you get a great workout skinning up the mountain! Check out some video of me and my buddies ripping some backcountry pow in Wyoming over New Years: http://www.stanford.edu/~dww/ So what will the class cover? We'll go to Kirkwood on Saturday and practice our tele turns all day. We'll winter camp and go backcountry the second day. The second day we'll cover some basics of avalanche safety and learn how to use our skis to skin up the mountain. Logistics: Classroom session - 7pm-9pm Thursday March 3rd. Talk about gear, skiing, and safety in a winter environment, organize for the weekend. Weekend session - March 5th and 6th (Saturday and Sunday) Cost of class: *Buy your own lift ticket at Kirkwood (I think you can get a pretty cheap student day pass) *rent your own skis/boots - maybe borrow this stuff *buy your own food/gas *30$ for non-alpine club members, 15$ for alpine club members. If you want to become an alpine-club member for the Winter/Spring/Summer it costs 20$ and will give you discounts on future trips. If money is a huge issue, but you are interested in taking the class, we can try to work something out... If you are stoked, fill out this questionairre, and don't be discouraged if you don't have a lot of these skills. We just want to know for ourselves: Name: Cell phone: Other Phone: Year in grad undergrad: Dude/dudette: Are you an SAC member? Can you make it to the classroom and the weekend sessions? Please list your experience with snowcamping, avalanche safety, and general winter backcountry travel. Have you tele skied before/how many times? Have you downhill skied/snowboarded before/how many times? Why do you want to learn how to tele ski? What outdoor skills would you be able to and be willing to share with others by teaching future classes? Tell us a funny outdoors story so that we know we'll have fun with you over the weekend. It doesn't even have to be a real story. It doesn't even have to be outdoorsy. Just make me piss myself laughing - I got my gore-tex monotard on...it'll be fine... Questions?
