It is an umbrella group for the outdoor clubs at Stanford, and as such we try to, at the beginning of the quarter, inform everyone of what is happening with the different groups on campus. Below is a list some of the activities going on in the first couple weeks. We'll send out another set of announcements next week. Did I mention that you get lunch, too? ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. GES7 wilderness Skills Class, starts 9/28, 7-9 pm, 320-220 Take a one-unit class and go camping in the mountains of California!!! WHAT IS THE OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAM? (OEP): Heralded as the most fun class on campus, GES7, a one-unit class, teaches introductory outdoor, camping, and climbing skills. You do not need any prior backpacking or climbing experience to participate in the class. You will need personal clothing, but we can outfit you with all the necessary equipment and group gear. WHEN DOES CLASS MEET? The class meets every Wednesday from 7-9PM in room 320-220. All classes are mandatory. WHAT SORT OF TRIPS DO WE GO ON? There are 4 weekend trips during the quarter. The trips this quarter will be October 7-9 (backpacking and camping), October 21-23 (peak attempt), November 4-6 (introduction to rock climbing) and November 18-20 (student-led outing). All trips are mandatory and extraordinarily fun. We visit different locations each quarter but common trip destinations include Yosemite, Sequoia National Park, and the wilderness areas near Lake Tahoe. All trips leave Friday around dinner time and return Sunday night. WHAT WILL I LEARN IN THIS CLASS? The class is geared for students who have little or no experience backpacking, camping, or climbing in the backcountry. We will teach all the skills required for safe and fun backcountry travel over a variety of terrains, as well as introductory rock climbing. Class topics include selection and proper use of clothing and gear, food and water concerns, first aid, backcountry navigation, weather assessment, minimum impact camping, group dynamics, and outdoor leadership. Graduates from OEP should be able to plan and lead their own trips into the backcountry of California. HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR OEP? Attend the first class Wednesday, September 28th at 7pm in 320-220, the class will be limited to 12 students so bring a checkbook to the first class to reserve a spot. WHO TEACHES THIS CLASS? OEP instructors are all Stanford students (half graduate students and half undergrad) who have extensive outdoors experience. IS THIS CLASS REALLY THAT MUCH FUN? Yes! Going into the mountains of California with 12 other Stanford students 4 weekends during fall quarter could be the best thing you do at Stanford! IS THERE A CLASS FEE? Yes. A fee of $250 covers food, travel, and gear for 4 trips to the Sierras. A Chris Hooyman memorial scholarship is available. QUESTIONS? Email Ryan MacFarlane (macfarla [AT] stanford.edu). Check out our website at www.stanford.edu/class/ges7. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. We may then take the food next door to the GCC (Graduate Community Center - directions below) to get down to business and discuss this quarter's fall calendar. This is an excuse If you would like to lead a hike, or some other activity, but can't come to the meeting, please send Lauren and Maria your ideas by email (stanford.outing [AT] gmail.com) before the meeting at so that we can include it in the calendar discussion. Though, you can continue to add items to the calendar throughout the quarter as you think of them. Also, please email us if you would like additional agenda items to be considered for the meeting. Even if you don't have plans to lead an activity this quarter, please come to just have fun and meet others. New prospective "members" are welcome to come and learn about the group. Here we will get down to business and try to fill the Fall Calendar. Hope to see your happy faces Thursday, Lauren, Maria, Craig ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Undergrad Activities Fair- Fri 9/30, 12-4 pm, white plaza Another chance to get new students (this time primarily undergrads) involved in Stanford Outdoors Clubs. Again, find the Stanford Outdoors table and tell all the new students how much your club(s) rock(s). ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Stanford Alpine Club First Meeting- Mon 10/3 8 pm, 2nd floor Tressider I hope everyone is getting much good climbing and outdoors fun in, and has been all summer. For those on the climbing and redwood lists who don't know about SAC, we are the Stanford Alpine Club, and we run the instructional climbing trips on campus, sponsor awesome slideshows, and facilitate climbing trips to Yosemite and other places by reserving campsites and helping people find climbing partners, among other things. If you don't know about us, and are interested, check out our website (alpineclub.stanford.edu), and come to our first meeting fall quarter. So, that said, this e-mail is mainly to give some info about what is going to be going on with SAC this fall, and to announce our first fall quarter meeting. Here is the info: 1) FIRST FALL QUARTER MEETING: The first meeting will be on Monday Oct. 3rd, at 8pm on the second floor of Tresidder (we will announce the exact room when we get word back from the meeting services people). This is the meeting to come to if you are interested in the Alpine Club and want more info, or if you want to catch up with friends after the summer and hear some cool stories. 2) Immediately preceding the Info meeting on the 3rd, we will have a mandatory All-SAC Instructors meeting at 7pm. If you are interested in leading a trip for SAC, or joining the SAC leadership, and want to hear about the exciting possibilities of securing prodeals and heavily subsidized WFR courses for SAC instructors, you MUST show up to this meeting. 3) This fall, we are going to have a full lineup of Backcountry Workshops, including at least one intro to climbing trip, most likely two anchors trips, and possibly more formal instructional trips. There will also be many informal SAC climbing trips going on from now until it snows (and even after). Information on each individual trip will be sent out a few weeks in advance. 4) Every week, on monday nights at 7pm we will be having short and fun weekly meetings. Following each club meeting at 7:30 we will be having an installment of the Sierra Nevada Slide Show series, which allows people from the stanford community to come share photos of awesome trips they go on. In the past, we have had people show photos of climbing in the Alps, mountaineering in Alaska, cycling across the US, working in Antarctica, and hitchhiking across Patagonia. Each week, we will announce who is going to be sharing their photos and stories. On a similar vein, if you have photos of a sweet adventure you went on, and want to share them, contact Niloy (niloy [AT] stanford.edu), who is our slideshow officer. 5) We are currently looking at bringing in some major speakers to come give talks here on campus. We are currently working on arrangements to bring in Simon Yates (from Touching the Void) at the beginning of winter quarter. More info on this will follow later in the quarter. Alright, if you have any questions, show up to our fall quarter meeting, or feel free to e-mail me any time (although I can't guarantee I'll get back to you right away, since I may be out climbing). Bombdiggity, -Matt (mfarrell [AT] stanford.edu) SAC President ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Climbing Wall Classes- start week of 10/3, climbing wall This is a brief email to remind everyone that we will be teaching the full set of climbing classes at the Stanford climbing wall this quarter. A more detailed message will follow next week. The classes meet once a week for 8 weeks, from the week of Oct 3 to the week of Nov 30 (no classes Thanksgiving Week). The class schedule will be: Tues: 11am-11:50 Intermediate A Noon-12:50 Intermediate B 1:15pm-2:15 Preadvanced Weds 11am-11:50 Beginning noon-12:50 Beginning 1:15pm-2:05 Intermediate A Thurs 11am-11:50 Intermediate B Noon-12:50 Beginning 1:15pm-2:45 Advanced To sweeten the deal, a NEW climbing wall is under construction. It may be ready for the first class, but more than likely we'll start in the old climbing wall and move to the new climbing wall during the course of the quarter. The new climbing wall can be led. For that reason, I'll plan to hold an indoor lead-climbing class for 5 weeks, from the last week in October through the week of Nov 30. The class will be limited to 8 people and you will need to supply your own rope. Email me if you have any questions, either about the lead climbing class or in general. The website (they promise me) will be updated on or around September 20. Once the website is updated www.stanford.edu/dept/pe you will be able to preregister by printing out two forms and returning them to the Roble Gym Offices. More on this to follow next week. cheers, Dan Arnold (rockrat7 [AT] yahoo.com), Instructor ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. Stanford Outdoors Slideshow- Tues, 10/4, 7:30, White Plaza This is _the_ opportunity to come find out what outdoor activities are happening at Stanford. Representatives from all the clubs will give short presentations on what their clubs do (and show some cool slides), there will be some time to ask questions, and a chance to talk to the representatives from all the clubs. A good chance, too, to meet other folks at Stanford interested in the outdoors. When you get to White Plaza, look for the green area by Old Union and Tressider.
