I think we should focus more on the stuff that will most likely not be formally taught during the weekend. I think we can hammer in SERENE, cams, nuts, belaying, rapelling (hard skills) a lot better when we're at a crag than in a classroom anyway. Focusing on this during the classroom will also make the participants understand that we think this stuff is just as important as the hard skills that they are going to learn over the weekend. 7:00 - 7:15 Introductions 7:15 - 7:30 What people want to get out of the class What you will NOT get out of this class 7:30 - 7:45 What is multipitch? TR, sport, multipitch, big walls, free climbing, aid climbing, big walls Why do you want to do multipitch? -views, fun, excitement, just because 7:45 - 8:00 more fun if ya don't get killed objective vs. subjective how ya die - rocks, freezing, falling (approach, descent, leading), rapping off end of rope, rope stuck when pulling, miscommunication (hard to hear, other teams), unclipping wrong thing (nutcracker), bad gear, simulclimbing, following traverses, darkness (climbing too slow, getting up early, overambitious), you leader being an idiot 8:00 - 8:15 decisions you make before you leave the ground for more fun! - check the weather! - Choosing a partner - Choosing a route - difficulty (5.9?), PG/R/X, grade and length (II, III, IV), approach, elevation, quality of rock, routefinding, weather, descent, daylight, remember - you'll be carrying a bunch of extra stuff!! Agreeing on a style - what gear to bring, when to start, how long to take (1 day?) scouting out approach/descent, talking to people (getting beta) Stuff to bring on multipitch - headlamp, clothing (HAT, Water/windproof top), food, water, approach shoes 8:15-8:30 how to get down - forced down a different way. Think about how you'll get to the ground from EVERY part of the climb - rappelling off of stuff that is there vs. leaving your own gear.
