Date: Tue, 27 Apr 2004 08:28:27 -0700 (PDT) From: Charles Booten To: alpine-club [AT] lists.Stanford.EDU, climbing [AT] lists.Stanford.EDU Subject: [SAC] SAC Intro Climbing Trip WHAT: SAC Intro. Climbing Trip Sun. May 16 (and a warmup session in the gym, approx. 5-6pm Fri. May 14) Apply by Fri. April 30. by emailing me (booten [AT] stanford.edu) WHY: Climbing outdoors is much more fun than any gym. Its a great way to learn some basic climbing skills or to see if climbing is something you might be interested in. Plus you get to meet lots of people at Stanford who like to climb and do other cool outdoorsy (?) things. WHO: People who may have climbed in a gym but never really outdoors, or people who have never climbed at all and just want to try it out and see why so many people get addicted. Class size will be limited, first come first served. MATERIAL COVERED: how to properly wear a harness, how to tie into the rope, belaying with an ATC, rope commands. Plus you get to rappel (a rush the first time you do it!), learn to back up the rappel and get to climb! WHEN: Sun, May 16. We'll be leaving early, around 7:30, the final time will be decided after people have signed up for the class, but this is a close estimate. The trip will be getting back around dark so don't plan on being back very early. There will also be a gym session to get started practicing on the basics on Friday May 14, probably 5-6pm or so but the time is flexible. WHERE: Castle Rock, about 45 min. drive from campus. we'll meet up on campus and carpool. COST: For non-Alpine-Club members the cost will be $15, that does not include food (bring your own) or gas (should be ~$5) but it does include any gear you might need to rent. For Alpine-Club members the cost is $10 not inculding food or gas, but again including rentals. Payment is required in advance because we don't want to turn people away who want to go and then have someone who did get in not show up. GEAR: All gear rentals are included in the cost of the trip. Gear can be rented from the Alpine Club on Wednesdays 6-7pm. The gear checkout is located at the climbing wall in DeGuerre Courts. You can contact Brian Gibbons (bgibbons [AT] stanford.edu) or me for more info. HOW: reply to this email (PLEASE DON'T REPLY ALL or everyone will hate me) and tell me 1) your climbing experience (outdoor, indoor, do you rappel, do you know basic knots for tying in while climbing, etc.). 2) what you hope to get out of this class 3) A funny joke (most important qualification, fyi: im not offended easily). Space is limited to and spots will be handed out on a first come first served basis. Hope to hear from you soon, chuck %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Charles Booten Mech. Eng. Dept.
