Stanford Alpine Club Gear Rental

One of the goals of the Stanford Alpine Club is to make available a wide variety of climbing equipment that might not otherwise be financially within reach of college students. This equipment ranges from basic necessities such as shoes and harnesses, all the way up to complete lead racks, dynamic ropes, and all other assortments of gear related to climbing and alpinism. Shoes, harnesses, helmets, and a few other items are available for rent to the entire Stanford community (in keeping with our primary goal of promoting safe and responsible climbing, helmets can be rented free of charge!) To ensure the highest level of safety and reliability, more advanced equipment is only available to people who have been checked off for the necessary skills requirements on the Stanford Alpine Club Skills Checkoff Sheet. Note additionally that rental prices are higher to non-members. For more information take a look at the Forms and Waivers section, e-mail the Gear Guru, or come to one of our weekly meetings.

Please remember to bring your Stanford ID with you, as you will not be allowed to check out any equipment without it. Also, note that dues paying members pay lower rental fees, and that rental of most anything other than the basic shoes/harness/helmet package requires a skills checkoff which indicates you have the experience to use the advanced gear safely.

Stanford Outdoor Gear

If you need to rent less technical gear, like a sleeping bag, tent, stove, bear cannister, snowshoes, snow shovel, or avalanche beacon, check out Stanford Outdoor Gear:

They generally have later hours and good prices, too.

Group Discounts on Gear

Starting in Fall 2006, we have been offered group discounts on orders from backcountry.com and their affiliated websites tramdock.com (ski) and dogfunk.com (snowboard). Note: they do not charge sales tax or shipping.
There is a coupon code for approx. 20% discounts on individual orders (often 20% on hardware and 30% on clothing), and we are exploring higher discounts with group orders (we expect an approx. 30% discount, but it varies with the type of items ordered). These group discounts are a good way to obtain brands not covered in the prodeals (below), such as Black Diamond. Also they are available to people who do not yet have the experience to be instructors. The coupon code and group orders are for SAC members (i.e. those who have paid dues), since there is administrative work involved. Dues help to support SAC events like slideshows and also help maintain our rental/instructional gear.

Prodeals on Gear

Starting in Spring 2006, Stanford Outdoors arranged for prodeals (approx. 50% discounts) on gear for people who instructed in classes (instructional trips) for at least two days, or did equivalent work as officers. We obtained prodeals from Mtn. Hardwear, Gregory, Sierra Designs, Vasque, Petzl, Trango and La Sportiva.

Cam Repair

If you have a cam with a frayed or broken trigger cable/wire, and you are a SAC member, Clint Cummins will repair it for free. Turnaround time is usually within 24 hours.
