Want to learn skills that are the foundation for lead climbing and multi-pitch climbing? Want to practice setting gear and get feedback on your placements? The Stanford Alpine Club (SAC) presents: ANCHORS-FEST A weekend class devoted to teaching 1) Anchors I (Sat) - how to build climbing anchors, using passive protection (trees, rocks and bolts), and how to assess anchors and protection, and 2) Anchors II (Sun) - gear placement, removing gear, and building anchors with traditional gear (nuts, hexes, cams, etc). You can choose to join either day, or both days. WHO: People who have already climbed outdoors and know how to tie-in, belay and rappel. (If you don^Òt, take an Intro to Climbing class.) If you've already set up a toprope or two, that's great, but it's not a requirement. Class size will be limited to 7-9 on first-come first-served basis. This class is open to anyone affiliated with Stanford. WHERE: Saturday will likely be held at Castle Rock, about a 45 minute drive from campus. Both days will be held near enough for day trips, so that you will be back home (if you want) for Friday and Saturday nights. We can set and/or climb until dark. COST: SAC members $15; non-members $20. You can pay club dues of $25 when you register and get the class at the reduced rate, plus all the benefits of being a SAC member for a whole year (including campsites, discounts, gear rental, etc.). WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING: Your own food and gear (harness, helmet, shoes, ATC + locking biner), and any material you can use to build anchors (it^Òs best to practice with what you own, since it^Òs what you will use). If you want to rent more gear, you can check it out from the Gear Gurus on Thursday nights 8-8:30p at gear hours (climbing wall in Arrillaga) from Mike Kerzhner or Chris McGuinness. Gear rentals are covered by the cost of the trip. Bring cash for gas. Payment is required in advance because we don^Òt want to turn people away because someone else is taking up a slot that could have been used by others. HOW: Reply to this email and tell us....... 1) Name, Phone # 2) Your affiliation with Stanford (if a student, grad or undergrad + what year) 3) Your climbing experience (a) do you know how to belay? b) indoor climbing, outdoor climbing, can you rappel, knowledge of basic knots for climbing, prior experience with anchors, prior experience with leading, etc). 4) Want to take Anchors I, Anchors II, or both, and why? 5) Especially if you are interested in joining for Sunday (Anchors II), what is the maximum range you are willing to drive? (Will help us to plan what location to hold Anchors II). 6) Do you have a car that you would be willing to drive? If so, how many can it seat? 7) Would you be interested in helping SAC teach an intro class? Hope you will join us! E-mail us if you have any questions! -your SAC instructors
