Date: Wed, 9 Apr 2008 14:01:29 -0700 From: Warren Caldwell To: alpine-club [AT] lists.stanford.edu, climbing [AT] lists.stanford.edu, redwood [AT] lists.stanford.edu Subject: [SAC] Intro to Mountaineering class, April 19-20 The Stanford Alpine Club will be offering an Introduction to Mountaineering class on April 19-20. There will be one evening classroom sessions and one weekend of practice in the mountains. Classroom Session: Wednesday, April 16, 7pm Location: Clark Center Weekend: April 19-20 Location: probably Round Top or Castle Peak, near Tahoe DESCRIPTION If you are a hiker hoping to start climbing some more challenging peaks, or a rock climber looking to experience the icy and snowy realm, or you've simply always wanted to get into mountaineering, here's your chance. We will cover the use of ice axe and crampons, traveling on snow and ice, self arresting, and some skills for winter camping and travel. The weekend trip will give everyone the chance for extensive practice with the various techniques, and we hope to cap it off with a half day climb up a moderate peak. REQUIREMENTS - Snow camping experience - Clothing and camping gear for winter (yes, it's springtime, but we will be sliding around in the snow and getting wet, so you will need clothes and gear to keep you dry) GEAR You will need a lot of gear for this class, but much of it can be rented or borrowed. There are three categories of gear: Clothing, Camping, and Climbing. I hope that you will all already have most of the appropriate clothing to keep yourself comfortable for two days in the mountains. Camping gear (tent, warm sleeping bag, pad, stove, pack, etc.) that you don't already have can be borrowed, shared, or rented without much trouble. Climbing gear (ice axe, boots, crampons, etc.) can also be rented, but I will be happy to offer guidance for those of you who are considering purchasing these items. The Alpine Club has a limited number of crampons and ice axes available for use. Check the Redwood club (redwood.stanford.edu) and Marmot Mountain Works in Berkeley (http://www.marmotmountain.com/rentals.htm) for equipment rentals.
