Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2007 22:28:04 -0700 From: Eu-Jin Goh To: alpine-club AT lists.stanford.edu, climbing AT lists.stanford.edu Subject: [SAC] Introduction to Outdoor Climbing (Oct 7 - Sunday) Stanford Alpine Club / Stanford Climbing Wall - Introduction to Outdoor Climbing Trip WHY: Climbing outdoors is much more fun than any gym. Its a great way to learn some basic climbing skills or to see if climbing is something you might be interested in. Plus you get to meet lots of people at Stanford who like to climb and do other cool stuff outdoors. WHO: People who may have climbed in a gym but never really outdoors, or people who have never climbed at all and just want to try it out and see why so many people are addicted. Class size will be limited to about 12 people -- first come, first served. MATERIAL COVERED: How to properly wear a harness, how to tie into the rope, belaying with an ATC, rope commands. WHEN: Oct 7 (Sun). We'll organize carpools from Tresidder leaving around 7:30 am; probably getting back around 6:30pm. There will also be a Friday night gym session at 8 pm (tentatively), taking about an hour, to go over some basics and straighten out gear issues - shoes, harnesses, etc. WHERE: Castle Rock, about 45 min drive from campus. COST: For non Alpine Club members the cost will be $15; this does not include food (bring your own) or gas (should be ~$5) but it does include any gear you might need to rent. For Stanford Alpine Club members the cost is $10, not including food or gas. Payment is required in advance because we don't want to turn people away who want to go and then have someone who did get in not show up. GEAR: All gear rentals are included in the cost of the trip and will be distributed during the Friday night meeting. HOW: Reply to this email (PLEASE DON'T REPLY ALL) and include the following information: 1) Your climbing experience (outdoor, indoor, do you know the basic knots used for tying in while climbing, etc.). 2) What you hope to get out of this class. 3) What you most like to do when you're outside.
