Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2007 09:50:34 -0700 From: Linnea Williams To: climbing AT lists.stanford.edu, alpine-club AT lists.stanford.edu Subject: Intro Climbing Class, Saturday Oct 13th WHAT: SAC Intro Climbing Trip, Saturday Oct 13th WHY: Climbing outdoors is much more fun than any gym. It's a great way to learn some basic climbing skills or to see if climbing is something you might be interested in. Plus you get to meet lots of people at Stanford who like to climb and do other cool stuff outdoors. WHO: People who have never climbed at all and just want to try it out and see why so many people are addicted or people who may have climbed in a gym but never really outdoors. Class size will be limited, first come, first served. MATERIAL COVERED: How to properly wear a harness, how to tie into the rope, belaying with an ATC, rope commands. Plus you will get to rappel (a rush the first time you do it!) and get to climb outdoors! WHEN: Sat Oct 13th. We'll organize carpools from Tresidder leaving around 8am; probably getting back around 5:30pm. The Friday night gym session will just be an hour, to go over some basics, complete paperwork and straighten out gear issues - shoes, harnesses, etc. WHERE: Castle Rock, about 45 min. drive from campus. COST: For non Alpine Club members the cost will be $15; this does not include food (bring your own) or gas (should be ~$5) but it does include any gear you might need to rent. For Stanford Alpine Club members the cost is $10, not including food or gas. Payment is required in advance because we don't want to turn people away who want to go and then have someone who did get in not show up. GEAR: All gear rentals are included in the cost of the trip and will be distributed during the Friday night meeting. HOW: Reply to this email (PLEASE DON'T REPLY ALL) and include the following information: 1) Your climbing experience (outdoor, indoor, have you rappelled, do you know the basic knots used for tying in while climbing, etc.). 2) What you hope to get out of this class. 3) What you most like to do when you're outside. 4) Whether you have a car or not and how many it holds. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OCT 13 AND OCT 7 INTRO TRIP: --- The trip on Oct 7th is designed as an informal chance for people who have climbed indoors (and preferably know how to belay) to get outdoors and on real rock with more experienced climbers. The Oct 13th class is instructional. It will be a formal opportunity for beginner climbers (who may not have ever climbed at all) to learn the basics of safely climbing outdoors. There will be a smaller instructor to student ratio because it is expected that inexperienced climbers will need more close attention. --- Thanks! Linnea, Clint, Dave and Will
