Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2007 12:35:16 -0800 From: Linnea Williams To: climbing AT lists.stanford.edu, alpine-club AT lists.stanford.edu Subject: SAC Intro Climbing Trip Jan 27! WHAT: SAC Intro Climbing Trip Jan 27 WHY: Climbing outdoors is much more fun than any gym. It's a great way to learn some basic climbing skills or to see if climbing is something you might be interested in. Plus you get to meet lots of people at Stanford who like to climb and do other cool stuff outdoors. WHO: People who may have climbed in a gym but never really outdoors, or people who have never climbed at all and just want to try it out and see why so many people are addicted. Class size will be limited, first come, first served, with preference given to those who were signed up for the cancelled Nov 4 trip. MATERIAL COVERED: How to properly wear a harness, how to tie into the rope, belaying with an ATC, rope commands. Plus you will get to rappel (a rush the first time you do it!), learn how to back up the rappel, and get to climb outdoors! WHEN: Sat Jan 27, with rainy day back up of Feb 3. We'll organize carpools from Tresidder leaving around 8am; probably getting back around 5:30pm. The Friday night gym session will just be an hour, to go over some basics, complete paperwork and straighten out gear issues - shoes, harnesses, etc. WHERE: Castle Rock, about 45 min. drive from campus. COST: For non Alpine Club members the cost will be $15; this does not include food (bring your own) or gas (should be ~$5) but it does include any gear you might need to rent. For Stanford Alpine Club members the cost is $10, not including food or gas. Payment is required in advance because we don't want to turn people away who want to go and then have someone who did get in not show up. GEAR: All gear rentals are included in the cost of the trip and will be distributed during the Friday night meeting. HOW: Reply to this email (PLEASE DON'T REPLY ALL) and include the following information: 1) Your climbing experience (outdoor, indoor, have you rappelled, do you know the basic knots used for tying in while climbing, etc.). 2) What you hope to get out of this class. 3) What you most like to do when you're outside. 4) Whether you have a car or not and how many it holds. Thanks! Linnea, Björn & Clint
