Date: Wed, 4 Oct 2006 09:03:31 -0700 From: Darko Sarenac To: alpine-club AT lists.Stanford.EDU, climbing AT lists.Stanford.EDU Subject: [SAC] Anchors I - Rocks, Trees, Bolts class (Oct 28) Date: Oct 28 (or 29) 7:30am to dusk Place: castle rock The Stanford Alpine Club (SAC) is teaching a workshop on building climbing anchors using passive protection (trees, rocks and bolts). (We wont teach gear placement in this class, that's covered anchors II) WHY: This skill is an essential first step toward learning to lead climb, and it'll teach you how to set up topropes and climb outside! WHO: People who have already climbed outdoors and know how to belay and rappel. If you've already set up a toprope or two, that's great, but it's not a requirement. Class size will be limited to 7-9 on first-come first-served basis. WHAT: How to make a good anchor, personal safety when in exposed locations (like on the top of a cliff), how to assess anchors and protection, different belay techniques, carabiner and rope characteristics, and other related skills. WHEN: Sat October 28. WHERE: Castle Rock, about 45 minutes drive from campus. You'll be home both Friday and Saturday nights, but you should be ready to leave early (around 7:30am) in the mornings and be back around dark (more exact time information will come later). COST: For non Alpine Club members the cost will be $25, that does not include food (bring your own) or gas (should be ~$5) but it does include any gear you might need to rent. For Alpine Club members the cost is $15 not inculding food or gas, but again including rentals. Payment is required in advance because we don't want to turn people away who want to go and then have someone who did get in not show up. GEAR: All gear rentals are included in the cost of the trip. More on gear checkout later (later mail) HOW: Reply to this email (PLEASE DON'T REPLY ALL) and tell us....... 1) Your climbing experience (outdoor, indoor, can you rappel, knowledge of basic knots for climbing, prior experience with anchors, etc). 2) Why you want to take the class. 3) Would you be interested in helping with an intro class. 4) Can you make it to a 1-1.5hr class (on campus) on Thursday Oct 26 (time: 7:30-9pm). Fees for the class will be due on that date. Best, Sam, Irene, and Darko
