Telemarking combines the functionality of cross-country skiing with the cool-kid hipness of downhill skiing, and is a great way to enjoy both the frontcountry and backcountry in the winter. Typical new-age tele skis look much like alpine skis with beefy cross country bindings (i.e. the heel is free), and the skiing motion involves lunging down the mountain, one leg alternatively in front on another. For a brief shameless pro-mo video, please check out http://www.stanford.edu/~mburke/telepromo.wmv What is the workshop? The workshop will consist of one day at a resort (probably Kirkwood), learning the basics of tele turning and face-planting. We will winter camp that night, and, conditions permitting, head out into the backcountry for the second day. The workshop is open Stanford affiliates of all skill levels, but familiarity with some type of skiing is preferred. When is the workshop? The skiing days will be on the weekend of Feb 25th and 26th. We will also have one Thursday night session (7-9pm on Feb 23rd) to discuss course content, winter safety, and logisitics. Cost of class: * $30 for non alpine-club members, $15 for alpine club members * must pay for your lift ticket at Kirkwood * rent your own skis/boots/poles and backcountry gear (tranceiver/skins/shovel) - might be able to borrow this stuff too, ask around * buy your own food/gas If you're fired up for the workshop, please fill out the questionnaire below. Don't worry if you don't have a lot of the skills, we just want to see who we're getting. ----------- Name: Cell phone: Other phone: Year in grad or undergrad: Dude/dudette: Are you a SAC member? Can you make it to the classroom and the weekend sessions? Please list your experience with snowcamping, avalanche safety, and general winter backcountry travel. Have you tele skied before/how many times? Have you downhill skied/snowboarded before/how many times? Why do you want to learn how to tele ski? What outdoor skills would you be able to and be willing to share with others by teaching future classes? Tell us a funny outdoors story so that we know we'll have fun with you over the weekend. It doesn't even have to be a real story. It doesn't even have to be outdoorsy, just some kind of story. Questions? Email me at mburke AT stanford.edu. And please email me the questionnaire by Feb 3rd.
